OFF CUT Kenya 'giving new life to old fabrics'
OFF CUT is the brainchild of Thabo Hüster, a Kenyan-German entrepreneur who grew up in Kenya and now lives and works in Berlin.
“When I saw enormous amounts of textile waste ending up in Kenya, I wanted to reuse this valuable resource and create something meaningful from it.”
40 million tonnes of textile waste is produced yearly by the global fashion industry ending up in landfills – or being shipped to developing countries such as Kenya. To the East African nation alone, this often criticised circle brings enough second-hand textiles to stock-up dozens of second hand markets – called “mitumba” (swahili for 'used') – in all major cities.
Our approach with OFF CUT is – to give these throw-away material from western countries and left-overs from production a second life by recreating new and unique, individually designed clothing for men and women. A duvet becomes a men’s shirt, a curtain a stylish blouson jacket for women.
OFF CUT creates sustainable clothing by upcycling fabrics with the ambition to minimise textile waste, thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions and contributing to a more sustainable world. We are part of the slow fashion movement which believes in quality fashion being worn longer, being reused and recycled, circularity in the fashion industry and a new life for mitumba (used goods).
